The mother of the toddler who died in the care of her Green baby sitter has been arrested on charges of heroin possession and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to authorities.Gabrielle Marie Moneypenny, 21, was stopped by a state trooper July 31 for an alleged traffic violation on Raber Road in Green.A Highway Patrol report stated the stop was made at 2:14 a.m.A small amount of heroin was found and sent to the state crime lab for analysis, and Moneypenny subsequently was arrested for OVI, the trooper’s report stated. The report gave no indication of what type of vehicle Moneypenny was driving or whether she made any comments to the trooper who stopped her.Her condition was not described. But when Moneypenny was taken to the Summit County Jail and interviewed during the booking process, at 5:21 a.m., the intake records say she “stated Tiffani Calise was the one who killed her daughter.”Jail records also show Moneypenny spent the night in the jail’s detoxification unit. She was released the following evening after posting a $5,000 signature bond.Moneypenny, who testified at Calise’s murder trial in June, was the mother of Aaliyah Ali, the 23-month-old girl who died in August 2010 during a two-night stay at Calise’s Mayfair Road apartment. On June 15, a jury found Calise guilty of murder, involuntary manslaughter and all other charges in the indictment after a seven-day trial, followed by nearly six hours of deliberations over two days.Calise, who turned 21 on June 20, was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Alison McCarty to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 15 years. She is at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.According to Aaliyah’s Summit County autopsy, she died of “complications of blunt impact(s) to the head.’’Calise testified and reiterated at sentencing that she never harmed Aaliyah. She said the child fell in the apartment bathtub, after a bath, and struck her head.In a pretrial hearing leading up to the murder trial, defense lawyers attempted to argue there was autopsy evidence showing Aaliyah had suffered injuries before she was in Calise’s care. McCarty would not allow it to be admitted at trial.Calise’s convictions and sentence are under appeal in Akron’s 9th District Court of Appeals. Her trial lawyer, William T. Whitaker, has vowed she will be acquitted.Ed Meyer can be reached at 330-996-3784 or at emeyer@thebeaconjournal.com.
